Preserve relevant technical records before they disappear

A good incident record is defined by provenance, integrity and relevance, not by the number of screenshots.

Preserve relevant technical records before they disappear

Create a simple handling register

Application logs may rotate, emails can be deleted and web pages change during normal operations. Following an incident, teams should quickly identify relevant records, decide who is authorised to preserve them and avoid unnecessary handling. Collection must remain proportionate to its purpose and consistent with confidentiality obligations.

For each item, record its source, collection date, receiving role, storage location and subsequent handling. Preserve originals where feasible and perform analysis on working copies. Cryptographic hashes help check integrity against a reference, but do not replace a documented handling process.

Practical checkpoints

  • Identify relevant records and retention periods promptly.
  • Use working copies for technical review.
  • Restrict access and transfers to authorised people.
  • Document operations that may change the files.

Discuss a technical or training requirement

Describe your technical environment, documentation question or prevention needs. The scope of any service is agreed in advance.

Support the next stage of response

Clear documentation helps subsequent work by specialists, insurers, legal advisers or competent authorities. Unprotected copies containing personal data or business secrets must not circulate freely. Preservation should not delay urgent steps to secure exposed accounts or systems. Teams need a practical balance between operational recovery and record integrity.

This guide concerns technical analysis, prevention and documentation. Third-party systems require an authorised scope; Pacta does not offer named-person private investigations.
